The Three Graces – symbols of beauty, creativity and perfection – have fascinated the artist since childhood. Rather than depicting them in their traditional nude form, he renders them as three abstract faces appearing to chase one another, reflecting his belief that “beauty is an endless pursuit – forever in motion, always elusive. The true Graces – real beauty – are found in the mind, the heart, and the spirit“.
Tintoretto’s painting celebrated Venetian governance and trade, with the Graces ebodying the city’s beauty and Mercury its mercantile spirit. Chan portrays Mercury as a planet, so named because of the god’s speed, as it is the fastest planet to orbit the Sun. Although he depicts Mercury as a sphere, he refers back to the mythical god by making sculptures of his attributes, the god’s winged staff entwined with two serpents (caduceus) and his winged helmet (petasos). Suspended in mid-air, the delicately coloured titanium works have a dreamlike, almost ethereal presence in dialogue with the striking architecture of the Bovolo Tower.

In the Palazzo’s second floor, three hanging sculptures respond to Tintoretto’s in situ Paradise, their ‘floating’ quality echoing the painting’s cloud-borne celestial beings. Chan’s accompanying soundscape draws on recordings of titanium being hammered and polished in his workshop – sounds he regards as music, and which connect to Biennale’s curatorial theme In Minor Keys.
A second room features a freestanding iron and titanium sculpture with a large quartz crystal, encircled by four directional speakers broadcasting a poetic monologue written and narrated by Chan. Visitors hear the audio only when standing directly beneath each speaker, preserving silence throughout the rest of the space.

At its core, Mythos exlores the relationship between mythology and astronomy. Across Eastern and Western traditions, celestial observation has long merged the scientific with the spiritual. This theme finds a resonant home at the Bovolo Tower, where in 1859, German astronomer Wilhelm Tempel discovered a comet and nebula – using a telescope purchased in Venice, the city where Galileo presented his improved telescope to the Doge in 1609.

The tower itself, long regarded in mythology as a ladder to heaven, mirrors Chan’s vision of a layered, interconnected cosmos. As the artist reflects: “Everithing is unrelated, yet everything is connected – the universe is, after all, woven from countless strands“.

The exhibition will be open until October 18th. It will be visitable everyday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (last admission at 5:30 p.m.).

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_gallery gallery_ids=”25545632,25545624,25545608,25545630,25545610,25545634″
