Penumbra features a series of new video productions by Karimah Ashadu (1985, United Kingdom), Jonathas de Andrade (1982, Brazil), Aziz Hazara (1992, Afghanistan), He Xiangyu (1985, China), Masbedo (Nicolò Massazza, 1973 e Iacopo Bedogni, 1970, Italy), James Richards (1983, United Kingdom), Emilija Škarn-ulytė (1987, Lithuania) e Ana Vaz (1986, Brazil). Commissioned and produced by Fondazione In Between Art Film, the institution founded and directed by Beatrice Bulgari, the eight works address, in different ways, the urgent issues of contemporaneity.

The exhibition Penumbra, the title of which recalls a partially illuminated space, is inspired by the Venetian rarefied atmosphere and by the hybrid architecture of Ospedaletto and of the Santa Maria dei Derelitti Church, whose spaces are transformed into a cinematic apparatus. The exhibition displays a reflection on the moving images as a space of material and metaphorical transformation. Penumbra confirms the Foundation’s commitment to the promotion of moving images culture and to the support of international artists, institutions and theorists who explore the dialogue between disciplines and time-based media.

The dialogue with the Complesso dell’Ospedaletto areas, where the different ages and functions overlapped in an unexpected way, the works of Penumbra suggest a reflection on the shadow zones of vulnerability and immunity moods, of memory and history, truth and fantasy concepts, inside the panorama of present global transformations. The layout of the exhibition, curated by Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli and his Studio 2050+, refers to the history of the place and at the same time spatializes the concept of the exhibition.
